Thunderbird Icons

Yes, they're here at last! Well actually, any icon pack on this site can be used in Thunderbird, and even the appropriate mail icons will be used. For example, if you install the Internet Explorer icon pack, your Thunderbird will end up with Outlook Express icons.

UPDATE: The code on this site has been completely revamped for installing icon packs. What does this mean? - Easier installation of icons in Thunderbird! Simply follow the instructions below to get an icon used in Mozilla Thunderbird.

ALTERNATIVELY: Thunderbird-specific icons are listed below these instructions!

  1. 1. Firstly, find the icon pack on the home page that you want. Click on it for more details.
  2. 2. Right-click the 'Install for <Your Operating System>' link, and choose Save Link As. Save the file somewhere you'll find it.
  3. 3. Start up Mozilla Thunderbird.
  4. 4. Click on Tools, then Add-ons.
  5. 5. Click on Install. In the open dialogue that appears, browse to the icon pack file that you downloaded, select it, and click on Open.
  6. 6. When it has finished installing, it will disappear from the extensions list. Now close all open windows associated with Mozilla Thunderbird.
  7. 7. Start Mozilla Thunderbird again. It should now be using your new icon pack. Enjoy!

I would LOVE to make a linux version of this, but the link is broken to do so. I need the larger sized .png though. Thank you.

Re: comment #7 - this would be brilliant :-) The original files for the Crystal ThunderBird icons are in the Woodstockjefficons.zip file in the IconPack resources section, but I'm not sure if there's what you need there, and as for the Cavallanti icons, I'll see if I can find the png files as well.

re: comment #10 - did any particular error message appear? If no message appeared, you may just have to restart ThunderBird for the default T-bird icon to come back.

Yes, the error message said: iconpack-uninstaller.xpi, Firefox couldn't install the file at http://mozdev.osu.edu/iconpacks/tools and resources/ iconpack-uninstaller.xpi, because: Cancelled

I've installed other icon packs on Firefox and used the uninstaller to remove them with no problems. This was my first try at installing & removing a pack on Thunderbird. So right now I have the tiny crystal T-bird icon on the upper left corner of my Thunderbird page instead of the default icon.

Well for some reason my prior posts won't display fully- parts of them don't show up. Anyway, I solved my icon problem by saving the link to the iconpack-uninstaller.xpi file to my desktop and then installing that file thru my T-bird Extension manager>Install button.

Hello Bob,

Yes to uninstall an icon pack in ThunderBird, you have to run the uninstaller file in ThunderBird. Running it in Firefox will uninstall any icon pack installed in Firefox, not ThunderBird. I'll try to update the instructions to make this clearer :-)

URLs are removed by default by this thing, re-adding them in post #12

Yeah I finally caught on that to uninstall an icon pack in T-bird you need to be running T-bird. :-)
Thx for explaining about the URL removal thing- I was beginning to get a bit frustrated! :-)

I installed the Thunderbird icon pack and when I tried to restart I get the message "A previous install did not complete correctly. Finishing install." and then nothing happens.

re: comment #22 - if you are using Vista, this may be a problem with user rights/privileges. Do you get this error when installing other Thunderbird Add-ons, eg. from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird ? Also remember that you have to download the file and then install it from within ThunderBird - simply clicking the install link in Firefox will not install it. (see instructions above)
